Now more than six years old, MIC CLUB is one of Midtowns longest-running events. Every Tuesday night at Apache Café, beatboxer MC and promoter D.R.E.S. tha Beatnik hosts a simple competition between several amateur rappers, with the winner earning a nominal prize and bragging rights for the week. A guest act of local or national renown usually performs, but the audience is usually more interested in watching their tipsy friends clumsily battle each other on the mic, proving Run-D.M.C.s adage that rapping aint easy. The Mic Club has become a rite of passage for college students and local music fans everyone, it seems, has been a few times and a reaffirmation of the participatory nature of hip-hop culture.
