Best Film Series for Local Filmmakers 

Film festival competitions risk being clubby, self-congratulatory functions, but the IMAGE FILM & VIDEO CENTER cheerfully tramples on moviemakers' feelings with its new Short Lived! A Shorts Slam. The screenings take inspiration from "The Gong Show" by featuring three judges -- egged on by the audience -- who either let the competing shorts run in their entirety or cut offending films off with a gong, and honor the entries with awards for both best and worst efforts.
