TEN THOUSAND VILLAGES
is exotic, authentic and for a good cause. This nonprofit promotes fair trade with low-income artisans from developing countries. But the quality is first-class. Items range from extravagant (a hand-carved leather chess set) to decorative (animal figurines carved from Muhugu wood in Kenya) to utilitarian (terra cotta pottery and dishes from Bangladesh). And plenty of ethnic fashions (sarongs, beaded jewelry) for the bod. Proceeds help provide housing, food and health care. We salute that.
