Sisters Leah and Chloe Smith grew up in Little Five Points, but were raised by parents who are traditional Appalachian musicians. And that heritage merged with their L5P attitude defines the music of R.I.S.E. (formerly Rising Appalachia). Their sound is sparse and traditional, with a wide variety of instruments that includes banjo, fiddle and oddities from Africa. But there’s also a strong modernistic edge that includes a melting pot of influences, ranging from hip-hop to blues to Caribbean music. Whatever the genre, when the sisters’ two voices sing out together in harmony, it’s honey to the ears. www.myspace.com/risingappalachia.
