Best Local Folk Act: R.I.S.E.

Staff Pick

Sisters Leah and Chloe Smith grew up in Little Five Points, but were raised by parents who are traditional Appalachian musicians. And that heritage – merged with their L5P attitude – defines the music of R.I.S.E. (formerly Rising Appalachia). Their sound is sparse and traditional, with a wide variety of instruments that includes banjo, fiddle and oddities from Africa. But there’s also a strong modernistic edge that includes a melting pot of influences, ranging from hip-hop to blues to Caribbean music. Whatever the genre, when the sisters’ two voices sing out together in harmony, it’s honey to the ears.
