Best local music institution to reinvent itself

Good things have been afoot at the Masquerade since the club opened its doors in 1989. Throughout the '90s, bands such as Nirvana, Radiohead, and the Flaming Lips graced the club's hallowed grounds on the regular. But as East Atlanta Village flourished in recent years, the apex of the live music scene shifted with it. But over the last few years, the classic venue has become a place true music enthusiasts can't afford to sleep on. By booking the upper echelon of national and international acts on the upswing — from Tex-Mex electro heads Neon Indian to Compton, Calif., mouthpiece Kendrick Lamar — the Masquerade has reemerged as a vital Atlanta musical institution. 695 North Ave. 404-577-8178. masq.com.
