The 2011-2012 season of performances at Symphony Hall opened with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra music director Robert Spano teetering over the orchestra pit and being supported by a gaggle of gloATL dancers in the contemporary ballet Maá. The performance space continued to surprise with several events that brought a sense of glamour, sexiness, excitement, and experimentation to the traditional venue. For Maá, Symphony Hall's stage was covered in grass and Spano collaborated with gloATL and contemporary local music group Sonic Generator, who performed Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's otherworldly score. The forward-looking, boundary-busting spirit lingered as Dean and Britta performed live to Andy Warhol's screen tests in March; hypnotic HD projections accompanied John Adams' stunning opera A Flowering Tree; the ASO dug into the sci-fi world of The Matrix; the Charles Loridans Foundation sponsored two free ASO summer concerts; and the ASO gave a number of standout performances, the best featuring Joshua Bell, Johannes Moser, Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Yo-Yo Ma, and the Morehouse College Choir.
