You don't have to be a Civil War buff to appreciate the 2,900 acres and 18 miles of hiking trails at KENNESAW MOUNTAIN NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK. In fact, the park is so serene — with slanting rays of sunshine cutting through towering pines and lovely plains that feel more like meadows than battlefields — it's easy to forget that, 146 years ago, the hallowed grounds saw some of the heaviest casualties of the Atlanta campaign. The park's majesty, particularly the granite mountain, serves as a fitting monument to the dead. 900 Kennesaw Mountain Drive, Kennesaw. 770-427-4686. &emdash;www.nps.gov/kemo.
