Best Overall Radio Station: WRAS-FM (88.5)

Staff Pick

Sure, you can justify the wild popularity of Georgia State University’s WRAS-FM (88.5) because of its long-running and refreshingly unique programming. Oldies but goodies include soundtrack symposium “Nitrate 88″ on Saturday afternoons, drum-and-bass show “Subterranean” on Friday nights, and the head-nodding Saturday-evening block of soul and hip-hop shows “Soul Kitchen,” “Urban Flava” and “The Bomb.” But when you add niche shows such as “Nippon Music Champ” (all things Japanese, Sunday evenings), and the girls-only “Mighty Aphrodite” (Thursday nights), then mix it with the station’s groundbreaking regular rotation, the quality is amplified. To top things off, WRAS devotes a fair chunk of its time and resources to Atlanta’s up-and-coming and well-established bands. Check out the station’s website for videos of live, in-studio performances – and be sure to listen for the student-produced show promos, which are nearly as entertaining as the music itself.
