On the last Friday of every month at 6 p.m., an estimated 400 cyclists gather in Woodruff Park and start a slow-rolling tour of Atlanta via bicycle. They start east on Decatur Avenue, filling Atlanta’s streets with a swarm of spinning wheels. Together, they form what’s called CRITICAL MASS, a diverse group of cycling enthusiasts who protest drivers’ disdain for bicycles and rally for cyclists’ rights. The event caused a stir in July when Atlanta police followed on motorcycles and ticketed riders. That hasn’t stopped the crowd, however, and the rides continue still much to the chagrin of motorists who find themselves behind the group. criticalmassatlanta.org.
