Best Place for Civil Disobedience On The Go: Critical Mass

Staff Pick

On the last Friday of every month at 6 p.m., an estimated 400 cyclists gather in Woodruff Park and start a slow-rolling tour of Atlanta via bicycle. They start east on Decatur Avenue, filling Atlanta’s streets with a swarm of spinning wheels. Together, they form what’s called CRITICAL MASS, a diverse group of cycling enthusiasts who protest drivers’ disdain for bicycles and rally for cyclists’ rights. The event caused a stir in July when Atlanta police followed on motorcycles and ticketed riders. That hasn’t stopped the crowd, however, and the rides continue still – much to the chagrin of motorists who find themselves behind the group.
