Piedmont Park Meadow
10th Street and Charles Allen Drive
The best part of Screen on the Green, say some frequent film-goers, is actually the pre-show picnicking. Hundreds of campers gather on the grass for two or three hours of chatter before dusk. Once the sun goes down and the films start to flicker on screen, though, the mood changes perceptively. Listen carefully over the whimpering dogs and 10th Street traffic and you can just make out the muffled necking noises echoing through the park. It's risky, yes, what with several dozen people within earshot. But a little Chardonnay, Cary Grant on screen and the stars above are a powerful tonic for romance.
