There are hundreds of churches in metro Atlanta, but the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING
stands out for its ability to maintain tradition while keeping up with the times. The Gothic-style cathedral has been in its Peachtree location since 1936 and its high ceilings and more than 20 elaborately stained-glass windows are all old-school Catholic. But the church's more than 5,000 members are a 21st-century mix of Mexican immigrants, elite old Southerners and young hipsters, all kneeling at the same alter. Between masses, young single professionals host wine tastings and meet for Bible study in local pubs. New immigrants learn English and the drama buffs perform musicals. With all the socializing and praying that goes on, members still find the time to welcome visitors and assist the needy.
