Best Reason to Live in Atlanta

"What kind of tree is that -- the one with the waxy leaves and the big white thing? a Northern friend asked. "Why, that's a magnolia, of course. It's only one of the many luscious trees that makes Atlanta so lovely. Trees, glorious trees. We've got hardwoods, softwoods, majestic White Oaks, crepe myrtles, dogwoods, loblolly pines, Red Maple, Silver Maple, Sugar Maple Sweetgum, Tulip poplar and more, just take a look. But take one soon. According to NASA, metro Atlanta is losing about 50 acres of woods a day, thanks to overdevelopment. Drought is also putting a hurt on our tree cover. A nonprofit group, Trees Atlanta (404-522-4097 or, is fighting that trend by planting trees and pushing local governments to do more to protect them. But, in the city too busy to turn off its chainsaw, that's a tall order.
