The least welcome Atlanta fad of recent years has got to be the legions of OVERPASS JUMPERS who hold up rush-hour traffic while threatening to leap off a bridge onto the highway. Last summer, they were joined by the two guys who threatened to jump off cranes and as recently as a few days ago, a woman threatened to jump off a bridge over I-85 in Midtown during morning rush hour. The DOT’s solution is nearly as bad as the problem: Along every urban highway, miles of chain-link fencing have rendered our already-ugly concrete overpasses even more unsightly. Adding insult to injury, they serve as a reminder of how nutty this city can be.
