Best Restaurant Worth the Long Trip: The Highlands Bar & Grill

Staff Pick

There are many restaurants around the world that we wish we could visit more often. Most are located in far away places like Paris, California or New York. But one is in Birmingham, a mere two-and-a-half hours from Atlanta. Frank Stitt, chef and owner of THE HIGHLANDS BAR & GRILL, figured out more than 20 years ago that the cuisine of the American South has a lot in common with the cuisine of the south of France. His elegant restaurant blends the two cultures perfectly. Menu items like pork rillettes with pickled cherries and cole slaw make the trek across the state line well worth it. We’d drive a lot farther for food this good.
