Best shop for meaty treats: The Spotted Trotter

Staff Pick

For the discerning carnivore, Kirkwood's the Spotted Trotter is like a gourmet candy store, but with meat. Whether you're in the market for a nice, dry-aged rib-eye or homemade peppered umami beef jerky, chef/owner Kevin Ouzts and his team of meat magicians have you covered. While the Spotted Trotter has become known for its house-made sausages and hot dogs - a gang of local restaurants have started sourcing their links from Ouzts - the boutique charcuterie shop offers many meaty delicacies such as whole smoked chickens and whole rabbits, locally sourced cuts of beef, pâtés, and salumi. Don't miss the Spotted Trotter's crépinettes, a house specialty. These ground meat patties - made with pork, lamb, rabbit, beef, or duck depending on the week - are laced with spices and other delicious things and wrapped in a web of caul fat. A recent version dubbed Pork Chops and Applesauce was particularly whimsical with spicy ground pork and chunks of sweet apple. When cooked, the lacy strands melt into the patty and you're left with a juicy, buttery, meaty treat.
