Last year, when shows about tattoo artists were at the peak of their popularity, the guys and gal at City of Ink in Castleberry Hill made a seven-minute video, a sort of unsolicited pilot for their own series. Their angle: black tattoo artists are rare. Owner and artist Miya Bailey says only about one percent of the professional tattoo industry is African-American, and lots of white artists don't necessarily understand how to make ink pop on black skin. And the artists at City of Ink really are artists — in multiple mediums; co-owner Tuki Carter is a member of the hip-hop group Hollyweerd — and the shop, with its colorful façade, doubles as an art studio. Oh, and someone should've picked up their show because the staff seems way cooler than anyone on "LA Ink." 323 Walker St. 404-525-4465. myspace.com/cityofink.
