Turning a neighborhood around doesn't happen overnight. At Lynwood Park, the past six years have seen crumbling roofs and decaying infrastructure being rebuilt. That's thanks to the efforts of the Lynwood Park Community Project, the area's community development corporation that has attracted federal and local funding. A total of 14 single-family, affordable homes are scheduled to be built with $500,000 raised from government sources. Pat Martin, a Lynwood Park resident and head of the corporation, is leading a clean-up of the streets and greenspaces. The group also is improving the neighborhood park to make it safe for basketball and baseball. As the oldest historically African-American community in DeKalb County, first settled in the '30s, Lynwood Park has learned what it takes to maintain a tight-knit, supportive environment and how to just say no to big-time developers.
