Best use of billboards

MailChimp

According to the Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia, more than 8,300 billboards dot the state. That doesn’t even include billboards on city streets. The vast majority showcase mass-produced dreck or, at the most innovative, cows hawking chicken sandwiches. Props are due to MailChimp for taking two intown eyesores and promoting local artists and the homegrown email newsletter service. In December 2012, MailChimp’s in-house design team produced works for a billboard on Krog Street, including a mind-blowing portrait of the company’s monkey mascot with more than 53,000 grains of rice that took six days to create. Five months later the company signed deals on billboards along the Atlanta Beltline, among other locations. MailChimp’s billboards feature Atlanta artists such as Thomas Burns, Cat Royal, Brian Steely, and more. All the artists are Atlanta based and their designs have popped up in other cities such as San Francisco, New York, Denver, and even Sydney, Australia. www.mailchimp.com.
