Big bowls

This year, Atlanta sure does have some bowls. On Dec. 30, the Georgia Dome hosts the homegrown Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl with LSU and Miami duking it out. Then, on Jan. 2, the Dome opens its doors to the ordinarily New Orleans-held Nokia Sugar Bowl, with almost-hometown team Georgia battling West Virginia.

On Dec. 29, Kenny's Alley in Underground Atlanta hosts the Peach Bowl Underground Patch Party, with a pep rally featuring the bands, mascots and cheerleaders from both teams. $10. 6-11 p.m. 50 Upper Alabama St.

Then, on Dec. 30, the annual Peach Bowl parade winds its way through downtown from the corner of Ralph McGill Boulevard and Peachtree Street to Centennial Olympic Park. Make merry with more mascots and cheerleaders. 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Right afterward, visit the Peach Bowl FanFest, a giant indoor pep rally with batting cages, bungee runs and rock climbing. 2-6 p.m. Georgia World Congress Center, 285 International Blvd.

And finally, the game starts at 7:30 p.m. We only hope you're not too exhausted to watch. Don't have tickets? Watch the broadcast on ESPN.

The next day -- Dec. 31 -- the Sugar Bowl begins its fanfare with the Mardi Gras-style Sugar Bowl Parade, complete with traditional floats and plastic beads (and with any luck, the traditional flashing of boobs). Expect a case of déjà vu with the parade also beginning at the corner of Ralph McGill and Peachtree, though this one ends at the Georgia World Congress Center. 7-9 p.m.

Stay at the Georgia World Congress Center for the Comcast New Year's Eve Gala, featuring performances by soul singer Irma Thomas and rockers Liquid Pleasure and Marc Broussard. $150-$250. 9 p.m.-1 a.m.

The Jan. 2 fun begins at 5 p.m. with the Sugar Bowl Fan Jam at the Georgia Dome's International Plaza, featuring games, prizes, food and drink.

And, oh yeah, at 8:30 p.m., there's that little football game being held in Atlanta for the first and probably only time ever. Don't have tickets? Watch the broadcast on ABC.

Can't wait to start partying? Creative Loafing is hosting the Grabbing Atlanta by the Bowls football party Dec. 29. The $5 cover gets you one drink coupon and free appetizers. 7-9 p.m. Sidebar, 79 Poplar St. 404-688-5623.

Both bowls take place at the Georgia Dome, 285 International Blvd. For details and tickets, visit or
