This India set-film about a group of nuns unprepared for the overripe sensuousness engulfing their isolated mountain convent, was shot entirely in Britain's Pinewood Studios and the garden of a retired army officer in West Sussex that contained the appropriate foliage. Director Michael Powell felt that this was the only way to achieve the complete unity in visual design that he envisioned. The results were spectacular, with the film earning Alfred Junge a pair of Academy Awards for color art direction and set design as well as one for Jack Cardiff's color cinematography.
