An “Imperial” ESB, like the Heavy Seas Winter Storm
but much different in character, this is another example of both the quality and creativity of American craft brewing. Bolder and stronger than any standard ESB, Breckenridge’s interpretation balances an oaky malt character with a citrusy, herbal hop bitterness and none of the estery fruitiness of a typical English bitter. It pours a beautiful, autumnal brown, with a thin persistent head and superb clarity. Bready, toasted malts greet the nose, along with a hint of winter spice. Burnt caramel flavors give way to campfire woodiness and leafy hops, resulting in a nice, dry character and a full mouthfeel from start to finish. Whiskey drinkers will appreciate the viscous body and warming alcohol. Very clean and well-crafted.
