The artistically ambitious NEKO CASE treads down the same path as Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits and other idiosyncratic musicians who record music less shaped by genre identification than their own willful personalities and interests. On her records, from solo projects like this year's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood to side projects like the New Pornographers' 2000 disc Mass Romantic, she moves effortlessly through country, punk and roots-rock. You can hear Case for yourself APRIL 14 when she performs with the High Dials and former Atlanta resident Kelly Hogan in tow. In addition to her opening set, Hogan is reportedly singing backup vocals for Case. $20. 8:30 p.m. Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave. 404-524-7354. www.variety-playhouse.com.
