Chris Verene's Top Five 

The Atlanta-bred, New York-based photographer and musician Chris Verene returns to the city for a solo exhibition of his Galesburg, Ill., photographs at Marcia Wood Gallery from Sept. 16-Oct. 22.

1) All terrain vehicles -- "It's really fun to ride these!"

2) Tenement Halls (Merge Records) -- "[Knitting Needles & Bicycle Bells] is a terrific new CD by my friend and former bandmate, Chris Lopez."

3) Inamorata by Joseph Gangemi (Penguin) -- "This is a serious historical novel about spiritualism. Also, Babyji by Abha Dawesar (Anchor).

4) M.I.A. (XI/Beggars US) -- "She is a truly great new electronic music star!"

5) A quick treat -- "Mangoes on a stick with hot sauce and lime."
