Chuck's most unique and impressive resume item, however, is his tenure in the professional wrestling circuit a few years ago.
Before the Video Store opened in 2001, Chuck worked for Georgia State's student-run theater, Cinefest, as a projectionist. He was also responsible for training projectionist neophytes, booking films and promotion. "I was notorious for booking movies that did very poorly financially. But they were movies I loved. A lot of the films were more suited for drive-ins and small art-house theaters."
Chuck's cinematic tastes lean toward the fantasy end of the spectrum. His favorite filmmakers and actors include F.W. Murnau, Roger Corman, Inoshiro Honda (of Godzilla fame), Fritz Lang, George Romero, Christopher Lee, Buster Keaton, Douglas Fairbanks, Jack Hill and Ed Wood.
From 2001 to 2002, Chuck wrestled in the now-defunct Southern Extreme Wrestling league.
His wrestling alter ego was the "Nature Toy" Devon Desire, an homage of sorts to the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair. "The name was given to me at my very first practice by my trainer. After seeing me in the ring and my abilities, he thought I could pull off the gimmick. ... I've always described Devon Desire as an inept Paul Stanley [of KISS]."
The "Nature Toy" Devon Desire's special move: "The Stairway to Devon" leg drop.
Scariest wrestling moment: "The first time I jumped off the top rope and landed on my back. It's one of those things that wrestlers need to learn how to do."
Chuck quit wrestling because of injuries and other issues. "I wasn't a big fan of a lot of the politics. I think a lot of the art is gone from wrestling and there are too many big egos. My year in wrestling was a good self-esteem boost, but I'm far prouder of volunteering at the library the past few months."
In 2002, Chuck wrote and co-directed a short film titled Goddamn Frankenstein. The film is a comedy about a bumbling, klutzy Frankenstein monster.
"In general, I've done a lot more behind-the-scenes work, like special effects, art direction ... . I don't want to make a career out of filmmaking. I just do it for fun. I want to be a librarian."
Chuck has a new feature-length film in the works. "It's supposed to be a comedy, but it's more of a tribute to all the things I used to watch on Saturday mornings and afternoons, like cartoons, serials and monster movies."
Chuck's arms are covered in Halloween-themed tattoos. All but one were done by local rock outfit Gargantua's Shane Morton.
