See & Do Holiday: Cinema Claus

Film

I love the holiday tradition of going to the movies after opening presents and feasting on Christmas Day, although the cineplex may not be the best place to escape noise, children and overeating. But what to see?

King Kong arguably gives the most for your money: It’s got the biggest special effects and longest running time. Jim Carrey plays a yuppie turned hold-up man in Fun With Dick and Jane, which may prove to be the best kind of movie to remake (the original 1977 flick is barely remembered).

The Producers (see Flicks) trots out plenty of Broadway-style razzmatazz and corny jokes, while Brokeback Mountain is the best chick flick (even though the main romance hinges on a pair of dudes).

For anyone older than college age, the surprise consensus-builder may be Mrs. Henderson Presents. Seniors will be comforted by old-pro actors Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins in the tried-and-true setting of London during World War II, while the plot — about the duo staging live nudie revues — should entice everyone else.
