Cool Dads Rock Soap Box Derby
August 4, 2013
August 3 2013 - The Inaugural Cool Dads Rock Soap Box Derby kicked off Saturday at the Historic 4th Ward Park around noon. LeVerio Barnes, founder of the nonprofit Cool Dads Rock, which aims to "make uncool dads cool and cool dads even cooler," visited the Atlanta Red Bull Soap Box Derby on 10th Street and thought, "Why not have [a soap box derby] for kids?" Barnes, aka Dj LV, invited participants to workshops so that the dads/parents could get a better understanding of how to build the cars. Each father-and-child team was asked to keep to a $150 budget on their derby cars. The results were soapbox cars featuring flames, a variety of vibrant colors, plush pink lining, and working fire extinguishers for an added smoke effect. Each contestant was given the opportunity to show off their soapbox cars with an individual cruise down the hill. The event was hosted by radio personality Griffey 2K and Dresthebeatnik. Food trucks along with other family-friendly activities were also available throughout the event.
