Critics’ picks for Atlantis and IG

Plus, a complete schedule of festval acts

THURSDAY, AUG. 1

ATLANTIS MUSIC CONFERENCE
?SHANNON TANNER & ADAM WRIGHT (8 p.m., Smith’s Olde Bar) Formerly fronting Heritage Cherry, Tanner and Wright play some of the finest Americana in town. From the looks of things, they appear to be the only country-type act playing Atlantis, which has shamefully ignored the local twang scene since its inception. If the city’s biggest music conference doesn’t even recognize your existence, what can you do? Well, like Tanner and Wright (and others) are about to do, you move to Nashville. (J. Kelly)

PEPPER’S GHOST (8:45 p.m., 9 Lives Saloon) Evoking a bygone generation of boisterous rock songsmanship, Pepper’s Ghost seems a good fit for our current installment of the never-ending “return of rock.” PG gives up classy two-part vocal harmonies and sugary bridges, delivered with a ripped T-shirt/duct-taped mic stand/wood-paneled basement sense of grit. 9 Lives Saloon (Hutchinson)

JET (9 p.m., Hard Rock Cafe) Atlanta five-piece Jet enjoys the enviable, catbird-seat position of not needing to play Atlantis. Serious major-label interest already swirls around its latest effort — a fresh, solid, three-song demo, recorded with David Cobb of the Veins. Knowing what the group holds in its hot little hands, Jet exudes the easy confidence of the sought-after. They understand implicitly that they’ve got what you’re about to want. (R. Kelly)

WILL HOGE (11 p.m., Cotton Club) Nashville native Will Hoge possesses an ear for meat-and-potatoes rock that mostly sidesteps the formulaic thanks to a self-effacing lyricism and the frequent guitar contributions of friend and former Georgia Satellite Dan Baird. Though hardly original, Hoge’s über-basic approach recalls the better practitioners of the form (he’s definitely more Tom Petty than, say, Bob Seger) evoking a bygone era when “rocking out” meant just that. (Robertson)

JAWZ OF LIFE (11:50 p.m., Apache Cafe) Decatur MC Jawz of Life’s debut — featuring T-Mo of Goodie Mob and Witchdoctor of the Dungeon Family — rolls smooth on hard-hitting production. But it’s Jawz’s lyrical wit that flows most easily into the ear, filling heads with serious grooves and serious topics. (Ware)

IG MUSIC ART FILM
?FAITH KLEPPINGER (8:30 p.m., Gravity Pub) Minor-key minstrel Faith Kleppinger’s website (www.faithkleppinger.com) bears a ludicrous list of all the singer/songwriters to which she’s been compared. Nobody can quite nail down who Kleppinger sounds like, and that’s a compliment. Her spare, clean guitar lines and mood-shifting vocals are distinct. And because she’s got a day job writing CNN copy, it’s no surprise to hear the intricate, word- loving lyrical twists that make her songs so appealing. (R. Kelly)

SKYLARKS (8:50 p.m., The Earl) Tonight marks the first show in more than a year from this often-overlooked trio, on hiatus due to the birth of singer/guitarist Mike Hunter and drummer/poet Megan Sexton’s first child. Jim Johnson plays bass for the scrappy little combo, which owes as much to T. Rex as to any Americana icon. Rock ‘n’ roll with so little pretense you’ll swear it’s the real thing. (Smith)

DRUMS & EFFECTS (9:45 p.m., Echo Lounge) Combining drums & effects & a hell of a lot of other stuff, DF/X crunch like party mix. Their songs — self-produced and self-released — are a burst of flavors, mixing bouncy breaks, big beats, buzzy guitars, burping synths with a playful flare. These 24-channel madmen with itchy MIDI trigger fingers know how to get a party rolling. (Ware)

DOMINICANS IN CONTROL (11:45 p.m., Echo Lounge) After Princess Superstar’s IG cancellation, Dominicans In Control have been called in to fill the gap. D.I.C. features the three-pronged assault of siblings Christy “M.C. Dom. Rep.” and Brian “Babydaddy” Montero (former Subsonics and DQE, respectively) along with Ben “P.C.P. Nightranger” Arnold (Husky). Babydaddy’s bombastic beats and Dom. Rep.’s “surrealist free-form” rhymes recall everything from Afrika Bambaataa to Trans Am, while Arnold keeps the crowd at bay with fake firearms and fancy footwork. (Radford)

JJASON BLACKWELL (12:15 a.m., Echo Lounge) Though saddled with a name that says “solo act,” the core of this six-piece hip-hop/soul collective consists of multi-instrumentalist Lionell Andrews and rotating crew of vocalists. And while billed as a collective of musicians, poets and visual artists, the result is a lot less pretentious. It’s organic and smooth, with flows closer to spoken-word than rap. And it’s as muddied by Georgia’s clay as OutKast — except with a college degree. (Sarig)

FRIDAY, AUG. 2
?ATLANTIS MUSIC CONFERENCE
?SLOWEARTH (9 p.m., Masquerade) Proving you can have it both ways, slowEarth combines the requisite groaning melodrama that the post-grunge kids seem to love with some truly interesting sounds and melodies, informed by new wave, electronica and industrial. For an A&R guy willing to take a risk — but not too big a risk — slowEarth may be the ones to watch. (Sarig)

DROPSONIC (11 p.m., 10 High) This louder-than-hell trio has proven itself to be one of the leaders of Atlanta’s rock scene, consistently growing a fan base in the clubs and with two successful Music Midtown appearances. The group flaunts its classic rock leanings and indie-rock attitude on a kick-ass new CD, Belle, on the 54/40 or Fight! label. (Smith)

D.R.E.S. THA BEATNIK (11 p.m., Apache Cafe) D.R.E.S. has led Atlanta’s hip-hop underground for several years, MCing just about every noteworthy event. The first to give big ups to local talent, he’s also a talented local in his own right. One of the country’s top beatboxers, he offers a one-man band emanating from his mouth. (Ware)

JIVA (12:30 a.m., Apache Cafe) In Jiva’s soulful approach, the bass pirouettes while Fender Rhodes, horns, acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies wrap themselves playfully around and together, percussion skittering skillfully like a modern dance troupe. Whether you enjoy nu_jazz or neo-soul, Jiva deliver. (Ware)

MYSSOURI (1 a.m., Masquerade) After a period of personnel changes, Atlanta’s Myssouri emerges revamped. They’ve got some new recordings that reflect a move toward a more rocking Americana sound (though singer Michael Bradley’s brooding baritone can’t shake its goth inflections). They’ve also got a new video, which they’ll screen during their IG showcase (Saturday, Aug. 3, 8 p.m.). And they’re one of only two bands playing both Atlantis and IG. How’s that for re-energized? (Sarig)

IG MUSIC ART FILM
?ENVIE (9 p.m., Earthshaking Music) The omnipresent Renee Nelson (American Dream, Casionova) helms this vessel of pop and ethereal chamber noise. The band often welcomes guest artists to join in on the turbulent yet strangely calming cacophony of classical and pop-informed soundscapes. (Smith)

CAT POWER (11:15 p.m., Echo Lounge) Cat Power is a one-woman band featuring sometime Atlantan Chan Marshall, who returns home an indie-rock hero thanks to her last two releases, 1998’s stunning Moon Pix and 2000’s The Covers Record. Beyond a doubt, she’s one of the more evocative and original artists to appear under the nondescript singer/songwriter banner in some time. When she’s up to the performance — which is by no means a guarantee — Marshall’s deceptively quiet yet emotionally tempestuous songs are effectively delivered with her distinctive, high-lonesome croon. (Robertson)

HEX ERROR (11:20 P.M., The Earl) Toned, taut and intense, socio-political post-hardcore trio Hex Error has no concern for your comfort zone. Matter of fact, if there’s a Starbucks anywhere near your comfort zone, chances are they’d like to shake it to its very foundation with their anti-corporate salvos, rhythmic riffage and disciplined dirge clusters in the vein of the Jesus Lizard-meets-Shellac. It’s appropriate, then, that IG co-founder (and CL designer) Jason Hatcher fronts the band. (Ware)

GRUPO FANTASMA (12:30 a.m., Echo Lounge) There was something really laughable about that whole “Latin music revolution” hype machine a few years ago. Drawing from the Latin music that existed long before Ricky Martin and Shakira, nine-piece Latin collective Grupo Fantasma pulses with traditional mambo, merengue and cumbia styles, mixing it up with a contemporary flavor. (Hutchinson)

SATURDAY, AUG. 3

ATLANTIS MUSIC CONFERENCE
?MICHELLE MALONE (9 p.m., Smith’s Olde Bar) Given the right breaks and timing, she could of been Sheryl Crow. But she retreated to indie-land and stuck with it, carving out a dedicated cult following nationwide and some celebrity here at home. While her rootsy folk-rock has evolved toward a more pop-oriented sound, it remains consistently strong. What she needs with Atlantis is anyone’s guess. (Sarig)

SOUNDTRACK MIND (10 p.m., Cotton Club) The music created by this easygoing Athens pop/rock trio is timeless in a way that can only be accomplished through good songwriting. Sometimes rolling like an old ’70s AOR act, sometimes grinding through like a post-punk band (with clear nods to Bob Mould), Soundtrack Mind forces you to hear its music without context — and that’s the kind that sticks with you longest. (Sarig)

SUPAFUZZ (12 a.m., 10 High) Kentucky transplants Supafuzz play a mighty rock that breaks the latest neo-categorical boundaries of rock and consistently brings the house down with its balls-out rumble. With intensity reminiscent of heavy hitters Soundgarden and raw Sabbath-like rhythms, Supafuzz tops it all off with smart lyrics and clean, appropriate production that’s beginning to find airspace on college radio. (Hernandez)

IAN WEBBER (12 a.m., Smith’s Olde Bar) Atlanta’s Tender Idols haven’t been so tender of late, but frontman Ian Webber’s new solo disc and accompanying Atlantis performance are sure to change all that. He’s no bore, though. His brand of thoughtful, melodic pop — crafted in the tradition of Squeeze and Crowded House — should yield far more head nodding than nodding off. (York)

IG MUSIC ART FILM
?VOLTA DO MAR (7:50 p.m., IG Performance Space) They have all the potential trappings of some self-important art rock “project” — the cryptic foreign name, the two bass players, the drummer playing with his back to the audience — but Volta Do Mar twist out non-pretentious instrumental prog-punk in loveable fashion. Earnestly technical, VDM plays prog with a grimace rather than a smirk. (Hutchinson)

YOUNG ANTIQUES (8:45 p.m., Echo Lounge) While laminate wearers swill free drinks across town and plot the demise of yet another lawyer-puppet band, the Young Antiques will be banging out a solid-state set of hard-rocking pop-Americana. The reigning champs of Atlanta’s most ready-to-sign band clique, YA could be some lucky A&R man’s wet dream. (Smith)

MASERATI (8 p.m., The Earl) Mellow and melodic, Maserati is yet another fine instrumental band to emerge from the local scene. What sets them apart, however, is that instead of regurgitating the same jagged, dissonant phrases as so many post-Don Caballero poufs — or slowly unraveling traumatic dynamics a la Slint — they concentrate on complex, chiming interchanges without the requisite paranoid plodding of post-rock. (Ware)

AMERICAN DREAM (10:30 p.m., The Earl) David Railey, one of IG’s founders, fronts this ragged-but-right assemblage of multi-instrumentalists and scene veterans. The haunting keyboards and heavenly harp of Envie’s Renee Nelson hover over this incredible string band like a ghost of suppressed memories. The addition of violin to the band’s sepia-toned intensity delivers a set of tunes that will dance around in your head for days. (Smith)

SONGS:OHIA (12:20 a.m., The Earl) Songs:Ohia’s Jason Molina resembles Will Oldham in the same superficial way Jawbox resembles Fugazi. There are shared elements: soft, wavering tenor; a rustic fixation; an often bleak, harrowing musical ambience. But as Molina maintains his prolific output (seven original albums in six years), it’s increasingly apparent he’s more kindred spirit than follower. His latest, Didn’t It Rain, is his most richly textured, lyrically honest release to date. (Parker) Contributors: Noel Hernandez, Matt Hutchinson, James Kelly, Regan Kelly, Chris Parker, Chad Radford, Justin Robertson, Roni Sarig, Lee Smith, Tony Ware and Kristi York.
