See & Do - Dance: Whirling Dervishes of Turkey November 07 2007

Sat., Nov. 10

America’s most popular poet isn’t Emily Dickinson or T.S. Eliot. The title actually belongs to the 13th-century Sufi mystic Rumi. Celebrated for his enduring love poetry, Rumi’s death 800 years ago gave rise to the Mevlevi Order of Islamic Mysticism. The order, also known as the Whirling Dervishes, performs swirling ritual dance symbolizing the love and unity Rumi expressed in his writing. On Sat., NOV. 10, the WHIRLING DERVISHES OF TURKEY perform the Sema at the Rialto Center after a preshow lecture from Rumi’s 23rd descendant. $29-$55. Lecture: 7 p.m. Performance: 8 p.m. 80 Forsyth St. 404-413-9849. www.rialtocenter.org.
