Culture Surfing - David Zeiger’s Top Five
Director of Sir! No Sir!
One-time Atlanta-based director David Zeiger breezed through town recently to promote his latest documentary, Sir! No Sir!, a revisionist history of the GIs who resisted the Vietnam War.
1) The Dardenne brothers: “I haven’t seen these Belgian filmmakers’ The Child (L’Enfant) yet, but The Son and The Promise wrapped their arms around me and wouldn’t let go.”
2) “That’s So Raven” — the Disney Channel: “The cultural life of our house is set by our 7- and 9-year-old daughters, and ‘That’s So Raven’ rocks. Lucille Ball in high school.”
3) Ozomatli and the Coup: “How can a fiftysomething find music that hits his gut like music did 30 years ago? Somehow it keeps happening, just harder to find.”
4) No Depression magazine — www.nodepression.net: “Call it folk, call it roots, call it alt-country. It’s all glorious.”
5) Apple iPod: “I have listened to music that sat on my shelves gathering dust for years. And when my 7-year-old patiently taught my 88-year-old parents how to use theirs, I knew that life was good.”
