Dinosaur Jr.: I Bet On Sky

Jagjaguwar

With I Bet on Sky, Dinosaur Jr.'s third post-reformation album, J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph have accomplished a pretty tremendous feat. They've willfully drifted away from the familiar sonic road signs of Beyond and Farm - painting the picture that this is indeed another Dinosaur Jr. - to arrive at a highly evolved and deeply textured new plane of the band's evolution. The beatific tones that "Don't Pretend You Didn't Know" and "Almost Fare" project a sense of comfort and natural chemistry in the guitar-bass-drums arrangements and J Mascis' lazy singing that these guys never really displayed till now. And Lou's songs, "Rude" and "Recognition," echo the same spun-out remembrance and resolve he delivered this year with Sebadoh's Secret EP. Who knew that this fractured mess of a group would age so gracefully? (4 out of 5 stars)

Dinosaur Jr., Shearwater. $28.50-$30.50. 8 p.m. Tues., Oct. 2. Variety Playhouse. www.variety-playhouse.com.
