Do Atlantans know how to tip?

Kinny, Atlanta
Sixty percent do. Some people don’t go out a lot so they have no idea how to tip. You can’t tell by the way they look, but it’s how they act. I never left tips until I started waiting tables. Then when I waited tables I realized all the stuff that people had to put up with. Anytime people are drinking you’re always going to get tipped more. But when they’re drinking three waters with lemon and a diet coke, no one is tipping.

The majority do not. People who have been in the business and people inside the Perimeter know how. People beyond the Perimeter and people with families don’t. It’s not 10 to 15 percent. It’s 20 percent! It was 15 percent 10 years ago. Servers still make $2.13 an hour like we made 10 years ago. Instead of [re-instating the] draft, everybody should have to live off of tips for at least one year — then they would know how to tip. If you don’t have the money to tip then don’t go out.

Rob, Atlanta
Definitely. They understand that gratuity is another word for gratitude. Atlantans are generous. Most people have waited tables so they understand the plight of the struggling youth. But customer service is what it’s about. That’s what’s going to bring people back to your place. You’re always going to have your good and bad. Be sympathetic. Maybe they’re giving you all they got. I just look at it as either I get it or I don’t but I’m always going to have my cup full.??
