Door 44

New ultralounge hits Midtown

Door 44 competes as one of the newest spots to open in the already club-heavy Midtown. But this self-proclaimed "ultralounge," located in the old Nomenclature space, has a bit more of an edge and plenty of sex appeal.

The entire interior is decked out in high-gloss black detailing, marble, red walls and velvety, flocked wallpaper. Ornate black glass chandeliers hang above the L-shaped bar that is surrounded by alligator leather bar stools and topped by a glass case stuffed with blood red faux roses. It all feels very Bram Stoker's Dracula – think posh goth with a splash of rock 'n' roll – but you won't be seeing any brooding Robert Smith look-alikes here. The crowd is more of the tattooed rockabilly and well-heeled Midtown blond variety.

Depending on the night, the DJs spin anything from punk to underground hip-hop. And when it comes to libations, the bar sports a good selection of liquors, wine and beers, such as the hard-to-find Hitachino Nest White Ale. If you are looking to live large, reserve one of the private tables (there is a two bottle minimum) where you can chill out with your friends and watch the go-go dancers do their thang.
