Culture Surfing - Drew Curtis

Founder of Fark.com

Drew Curtis founded Fark.com, a blog filled with snarky commentary on mass-media material. After reading almost every news article printed since the birth of the website in 1999, Curtis wrote his own critique of the media in the insightful, funny book filled with the best of Fark witticisms, It’s Not News, It’s Fark: How Mass Media Tries to Pass Off Crap as News. A Cappella Books hosts an evening with Curtis at Manuel’s Tavern on Saturday, July 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Homestar Runner: “Flat-out the best indie video content on the Net. I really like it because the humor is squeaky clean and it’s still funny. That’s hard to do.”

Soccer and beer: “I play soccer about five times a week and finish off with beers with friends. I’m a huge extrovert, and I work at home, so I need to get out of the house.”

Fun charities: “Architecture for Humanity and Boobie-thon. I love charities that are offbeat yet still worth giving money to. Boobie-thon raises money for breast cancer by offering pics of cleavage of well-known and obscure female bloggers. Save the boobies. A for H fascinates me because it’s a consortium of engineers who are thinking way outside the box to build quickly deployable housing to disaster areas.”

Bourbon: “I live in Kentucky, so this stuff is easy to come by. In particular I like Four Roses, Bulleit and Woodford Reserve Four Grain. The last is pretty dangerous; it’s too easy to toss back an entire bottle.”
