Dweezil Zappa & Various Artists

Zappa Plays Zappa DVD

Honor thy father. We've heard that before, and what better way than through an incredible music tribute? Frank Zappa died in 1993, and son Dweezil took 10 years to come to terms with the loss. Now fronting ZPZ on this amazing live performance DVD, he and his band supremely honor Frank's music. Joined by Zappa alumni Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio and the incredibly talented Napoleon Murphy Brock, Dweezil unleashes the results of three years spent learning to play Frank's guitar licks. Covering virtually every era of Frank's ouvre (with a heavy emphasis on the Apostrophe (')/Overnight Sensation era), the band proves once again that Frank was a true musical genius. Overall the musicianship is superb, but the editing is jarring at times. Available as a double DVD or deluxe DVD/CD with extra songs, it's a great Father's Day gift. 5 stars

Zappa Plays Zappa performs at Variety Playhouse. $38-$40. Thurs., June 12. 8 p.m. 404-524-7354.
