Attractive Eighties Women dig heels in humor

Like all good jokes, Attractive Eighties Women have an element of absurdity.

Mack Williams, who leads the group, is the head animator on the Adult Swim comedy "Frisky Dingo," and much of that TV show's punchy humor is heard in the group's mock-metal songs. "Murder Kroger" is a nickname Williams undeservedly gives to the Kroger grocery store on Ponce de Leon Avenue. On "They Shoot Hipsters, Don't They," Williams name-checks intown favorites such as Decatur Social Club, MJQ and the American Apparel store before adding the kicker, "Baby you know I'm just a hipster douche bag!"

Much of these songs' appeal stems from culture clashes: the homeless people and random freaks vs. everyone else on "Murder Kroger," or the hipsters vs. the rest of Atlanta on "They Shoot Hipsters." But it's not satire meant to be taken seriously.

"When I'm making fun of people and things, I guess it's satire, but it's definitely not meant as a critique," he says. "Yeah, hipsters annoy me, but all the places I name in the song are places I go to all the time and hang out because I like them. In a way, I'm a hipster douche bag myself."

Attractive Eighties Women consist of four media-savvy musicians, including Williams, Steve LaBate (who works at Paste magazine), Chris Bennett (a freelance videographer) and Patrick Tang (who designs search optimization tools). Formed in 2005, the band recorded its debut album, Coup D'e Ta-Ta's, during a live performance at Fatback Sound Studio last August. Among its highlights are self-explanatory titles such as "Gonna Kill Myself (Because of You)," "Mama's on Meth," and "Master Cylinder."

"We all have day jobs. This is sort of our fun hobby," Williams says. "I don't want people to just write us off as a band that's irrelevant, because I think funny music is very relevant."

Attractive Eighties Women perform with Pistolero and Bases Loaded Sat., Jan. 12. $7 ticket price includes copy of the album. 9:30 p.m. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Road. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com.
