Eddie's Attic turns 15

Rockin' the (open) mic

Some people base their lives in being an open book. Eddie's Attic bases the club's legacy on an open mic. It's fitting, then, that the upcoming 15th anniversary of the popular spot falls on Open Mic Night. Not the spectacular biannual Open Mic Showcase, but on a regular Monday evening gathering of the best -- and occasionally the worst -- of the folk scene.

"It's a great showcase," says owner Bob Ephlin. But that's just one aspect of the intimate venue. "This is a listening room and that's the main thing. People come here to hear great music. And the Open Mics are booked over two months in advance, so artists come here from, literally, all over the world – just to play."

Titular former owner Eddie Owen – the pivotal Decatur-scene grandfather – has been back on board for the two years Ephlin has owned the place. Owen is a soft-spoken figure, eschewing the spotlight as he hosts events, books acts and generally lets the music do the talking while he toils behind the bar with his trusty laptop.

On the actual anniversary, a slew of regulars have been invited to a party on the patio, but don't expect a star-studded show on the stage. "That would take away from the showcase, I think," says Ephlin, sitting at a table overlooking downtown Decatur. "The main thing is the performer and their songs. Everyone gets an equal shot here: There's a good sound system and an audience primed to actively listen."

Eddie's Attic celebrates 15 years Mon., May 7. 1992 drink prices will be featured. 515-B N. McDonough St. 404-377-4976. www.eddiesattic.com.
