Layered and expressive, filled with wild energy and magnetic color, Jonesboro artist Alfred Conteh's solo show at Apache Cafe THROUGH SEPT. 4 appropriately corrals his paintings under the title LAYERS. Conteh is an artist with a lot to say as he jumps between African-Americans' past, present and future. In borrowing from the visual vocabulary of the past, Conteh has admitted his debt to the great American regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton. Conteh adds his own black experience and imagery to Benton's elongated figures and salt-of-the-earth Americana in work that moves between darkness and affirmation, and which is almost certain to provoke a reaction.
