Profile - Fashion queen in Tangerine
On the fast track at 25, Amy Tan has a clothing line — Amy Tangerine — that is nationally distributed and sells on the Internet at www.girlshop.com.
So why Tangerine? For obvious reasons, her real name would have caused some confusion — no, she didn’t write it, but yes, she has read the Joy Luck Club. Tangerine was already a trademarked company so she added her first name into the mix.
Amy’s first design was a pair of boxer shorts she sewed for her boyfriend during a high school sewing class. She then went on to design and sew her senior prom gown.
Amy attended Georgia Tech as an industrial design major. Still interested in fashion design, she began making formal dresses for her seven female roommates during her sophomore year. The dresses were a hit; she left Tech and enrolled at American Intercontinental University.
Amy wore a pair of arm warmers she had crocheted to the opening of Blue Genes boutique in Buckhead. The owners loved them and the rest, as they say, is history.
Amy had her first Hollywood moment when Cindy Crawford was photographed wearing an Amy Tangerine hand-embroidered tank from Fred Segal in L.A.
Even though she wears her own designs, Amy still likes to shop around town. Her favorite destinations include Blue Genes, Bill Hallman, Fab’rik and Mitzi & Romano.
You can easily get Amy’s attention while she tools around town on her Voloci scooter; she can’t go over 35 mph. Also, she can be seen from time to time at her old college hangout — Moondogs.
