Femi Kuti Plays the Variety Playhouse
May 5, 2011
Femi Kuti and the Positive Force band played a high powered, energetic, political set last night at the Variety Playhouse. Femi Kuti drove the band with his expressive dancing, passionate multi-instrumental jamming, political speeches ("Europeons handed over power to African leaders that they could manipulate") and sexual advice
("Don't come to fast").
The 12-piece Positive Force band included five horn players, two
drummers, a keyboardist, bassist, guitarist and Kuti, who played saxophone, trumpet and keyboards. They played as if they were a single instrument with Kuti conducting the band, cajoling, singing and screaming.
It was a good night.
Kuti was touring behind his latest Africa for Africa, an intensely political album which includes songs like "Bad Government," "Can't Buy Me," "Politics In Africa," and "Nobody Beg You."
