Here are some of Atlanta's best al fresco locations, grouped according to your breezy needs this summer ...
A fantastic view is something no interior designer can create. Newcomer JCT Bar (1198 Howell Mill Road, 404-355-2252, www.jctkitchen.com) wraps around the roof of the warehouse building, offering stunning vistas of downtown, Midtown and the urban loveliness of the 14th Street Lofts' rambling facade. Six Feet Under (415 Memorial Drive, 404-523-6664; and 685 11th St., 404-810-0040, www.sixfeetunderatlanta.com) now has two options: the original rooftop bar in Grant Park overlooking the Oakland Cemetery and the new Westside location with a sweet view of Midtown.
The only thing better than drinking beer while frittering away a summer afternoon is doing so with your dog. Three Atlanta patios are well-equipped for both: Brewhouse Cafe (401 Moreland Ave., 404-525-7799, www.brewhousecafe.com), a traditional pub with a patio overlooking eclectic Euclid Avenue; 97 Estoria (727 Wylie St., 404-522-0966, www.97estoria.com), which attracts a hipster crowd just south of the Krog Street tunnel; and Park Tavern (500 10th St., 404-249-0001, tavern.parktavern.com), whose backside opens out into Piedmont Park's meadow, near the park's off-leash doggie playground.
While many of the patios here serve delicious food, there are a couple in town that especially cater to the gourmet-minded among us. Get down on the bistro classics at Shaun's (1029 Edgewood Ave., 404-577-4358, www.shaunsrestaurant.com), which resides in the former Inman Park Patio space. Nearby, the cozy patio at Krog Bar (112 Krog St., 404-524-1618, www.krogbar.com) is a perfect place to sip wine and dine on tapas.
Paul Luna and James Erlich are the city's patron saints of patios. Before leaving Atlanta, Luna launched Midtown's Loca Luna (836 Juniper St., 404-875-4494, www.loca-luna.com), home to a massive tropical patio and a killer caipirinha. Along with Erlich, Luna then opened Buckhead's Eclipse di Luna (764 Miami Circle, 404-846-0449, www.eclipsediluna.com), a smaller, classier Loca Luna, serving delightful mojitos and cava sangria. With Luna gone, Erlich branched out with Poncey-Highland's Eclipse di Sol (640 N. Highland Ave., 404-724-0711, www.eclipsedisol.com), featuring a breezy European-style patio and perhaps Atlanta's most beguiling cocktail, the grapefruit-rosewater martini.
You'd think eating outdoors would be for the outdoorsy types. Not always the case. But a couple of patios are truly geared toward those of us enamored of the thrills of nature. Canoe (4199 Paces Ferry Road, 770-432-2663, www.canoe-atl.com) has a gorgeous patio that overlooks the Chattahoochee to create a setting that is stunningly romantic. The garden at Wahoo (1042 W. College Ave., Decatur, 404-373-3331, www.wahoogrilldecatur.com) is less wild but no less lovely, with flagstones, flowering shrubs and a misting system to keep you cool.
Part of the appeal of the summer cocktail scene is the crowd of hot young things you're likely to encounter. If that special brand of people-watching is on your to-do list, there are some outdoor venues that might suit you fine. Apres Diem (931 Monroe Drive, 404-872-3333, www.apresdiem.com) is known not just for its patio but for the amazingly fine waiters and waitresses who serve.
Enjoyed the great shots. Being a native Atlantan, they show the diversity of it's people,…
