See & Do - Film: Recycled Life October 17 2007

Thurs., Oct. 18

The 2006 Academy Award-nominated short documentary RECYCLED LIFE reveals the startling poverty that has driven generations of families to make their livings sifting through garbage at the 40-acre Guatemala City dump. In scenes of mind-boggling squalor, vultures compete with human beings for scraps, toddlers nap on garbage bags, and cats, dogs and children are cast out as easily as broken toys. The nonprofit Safe Passage began in 1999 to help educate the children whose families work in the dump. On Thurs., OCT. 18, Recycled Life director Leslie Iwerks (granddaughter of influential Disney animator Ub Iwerks) will be on hand at the Fox Theatre screening and fundraiser for a Q&A along with the food, music and silent auction benefiting Safe Passage. $50. 6-10:30 p.m. 660 Peachtree St. 404-840-4862. www.worldinneednow.org.
