The 18 tracks that make up Flying Lotus' Until the Quiet Comes flow seamlessly together, marking a departure from the dissonant stylings of Steven Ellison's previous albums Los Angeles and Cosmogramma. The graceful pace of "See Thru to U" and "Getting There" resonate with layers of rhythm and texture, eliciting the same blissful brainwaves as such early '70s pre-fusion classics as Lonnie Liston Smith's Astral Traveling and Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda - after all, Ellison is Coltrane's great-nephew. The resemblance lies in the album's gorgeous headspace, punctuated only by the mutant factor of "Putty Boy Strut" and "Electric Candyman" (featuring Thom Yorke). Other guest spots such as Erykah Badu and Stephen Bruner remain in the shadows, allowing Ellison's production chops to shine ever so brightly. (5 out of 5 stars)
