FRIDAY 06.01

STAIND, BRAND NEW IMMORTALS, COLD -- Although Staind sometimes gets grouped with the talentless myriad of recent radio-metal acts, they play with a keen sense of melody and maturity that place them high above their Bizkity peers. Opening band Cold, on the other hand, suffers from blandness and lack of originality. Also on the bill is local trio Brand New Immortals, who play catchy yet forgettable radio rock. Centennial Park (Jordan)

Ever wonder how all those new plays get their first chance? The NEW SOUTH FOR THE NEW CENTURY PLAY FESTIVAL at the Horizon Theatre shows you how they get off the ground. Combining two mainstage plays, eight play readings, a young playwright's festival and the 24-hour play festival, this is your chance to see lots of new writers, plays and ideas, and even offer feedback. JUNE 1-JULY 22. Mainstage show, The Genes of Beauty Queens opens on June 1 at 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and is in rep with Hambone which opens on June 15. $16-$25. 1083 Austin Avenue. 404-584-7450.

Lookin' for a reason to get to church, but not really feelin' up to it in the mornin'? The Ebenezer Baptist Church will be wailin' with Robert Spano conducting the ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA in a free concert on JUNE 1 at 8 p.m. Featuring the 2001 Texaco-Sphinx Competition Winners, Melissa White and Ilmar Gavilan, the show is Spano's first outside of Atlanta Symphony Hall since he's been named Musical Director. Horizon Sanctuary of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 400 Auburn Avenue at Jackson Street 404-733-5000.
