FRIDAY, AUGUST 17

GREASEPAINT, WINTERVILLE -- Jim Stacy and Mike Geier clown around again with Greasepaint, their eerie musical circus featuring Tom Waits-ian vocals and sexy dancing monkey girls. In a more perfect world, Tim Burton would have hired them for a Planet of the Apes music video. Setting an appropriately offbeat mood is opening act Winterville, who hail from Brooklyn but boast three former Atlantans. The quintet, whose wistful folk-rock evokes Paul Simon by way of Lambchop, brew fiddle, banjo and aching harmonies into a warm blend that's perfect for those long cold nights ahead. Star Bar (Nicoll/Sarig)

LAURA BLACKLEY BAND -- This Asheville, N.C., quartet summons Patsy Cline by way of Melissa Etheridge. The band's gritty, beer-soaked rockabilly swing sound manages to both soothe and inspire. My Sister's Room (Butler)

MERCYCRUSH -- Local heavy rockers Mercycrush have a new CD called Jiva just out. While its full of those guttural growls that make modern rock so oppressively un-fun, at its best it also happens to be powerfully melodic and tightly wound instrumentally, delivering maximum punch. 9 Lives Saloon (Sarig)

NASHVILLE PUSSY --Amazonian fire-breather Corey Parks is sadly long-gone along with the legendary on-stage girl-girl action. But guitarist Ruyter Suys has more than enough cleavage to spare along with plenty of kick-ass Southern-fried metallic boogie. That scary guy onstage playing guitar is her husband, so keep yer hands away and get ready for a shit storm of rock 'n' roll sleaze, kind of like AC/DC tearing down the trailer park with the cast of Deliverance. Echo Lounge (Trammell)

NOMENCLATURE MUSEUM'S FOUR-YEAR ANNIVERSARY -- Celebrate the birthday of Atlanta's best house club (in the literal sense) -- home to fashion shows and fashion victims, art shows and tasteless displays. Some of the city's best house (in the descriptive sense) and downtempo DJs -- including J-Luv, Ulises, Chris Leclair, Kolia, Alex King, CIC and Bethany -- make the walls sweat and the crowd wet. Enjoy kabobs and frozen drinks on the patio and scorching tunes on the dance floor. Nomenclature Museum (Ware)

SOUTHEAST MUSIC SHOWCASE -- The fourth annual showcase of unsigned, mostly local, acts gets under way at 8 p.m. with its rock/alternative lineup. Included: Up-and-coming modern rockers Cloud 10 (see Earshot, p. 79), ambient hip-hop group ADDG, teen punkers the Senators, new-soul man Chiedza and six more groups. Roxy (Sarig)

SUB:MARINE SHOWCASE -- With the recent demise of its franchise band, local label sub:marine launches its post-underwater era with this three-act bill. Stilllife;gaijin, the studio project of former underwater members Jeremy Wilkins and Alec Irvin, makes its live debut. Larvae, featuring another former underwater member, Matthew Jeanes, also performs. Lifeform Project, a laptop-driven multimedia affair, rounds out the lineup. The Earl (Sarig)

THE TENDER IDOLS -- For those pining for the Radiohead of old, Atlanta's own Brit-pop quintet gladly delivers the vaguely proggy, moody and melodic goods. Still working their national debut, Distressor, the Idols headline a bill tonight that also features local acts the Yard and Hundred Dollar Day. Smith's Olde Bar (Sarig)
