FRIDAY, AUGUST 3

ATLANTIS MUSIC CONFERENCE -- See article; schedule and picks. various venues (Sarig)

BACH ON A HOOK -- With local art star Chris Verene formerly at the drums, electric violist Marty Matteson concocted a twisted take on the "Hooked on Bach" classical/pop fusion. Verene's now gone, but Matteson is pushing forward with an expanded lineup and new material. International Artists Guild (Sarig)

BARENAKED LADIES, ACTION FIGURE PARTY -- You don't need to be a product of '70s pop culture to dig BNL. Though the goofy lyrics and antics belie their chops, BNL are a solid rock band -- a welcome change from last week's disposable 99X hit makers. Oddly MIA from the show's ads is Action Figure Party, aka multi-instrumentalist Greg Kurstein, who swirls loops, samples, fusion jazz and funk into a heady, hip-shaking mix. Apparently, modern-rockers Vertical Horizon and singer-songwriter Sarah Harmer also open. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Prusin/Horowitz)

MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER, BEAUSOLEIL -- Though popular as a country artist, Carpenter has shifted to become a reflective adult pop/folk singer/songwriter in the Lucinda Williams vein. On her first album in five years, she adds subtle Beatle-esque touches (including sitar), but it remains a somber collection. But her talented touring band should up the energy. So will the legendary Cajun openers, who'll share the stage for her "Down at the Twist and Shout" hit. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Horowitz)

HABITAT 1 -- After a long run of ESP101 Fridays at the Church, Iris Promotions take their show just a few blocks down the road to Studio Central. But don't think that just because they have a new location they won't offer the same triple-dipped aural treats for Atlanta's candy kids. Tonight, they present two top U.K. junglists -- jump-up specialist Mickey Finn and the original drum 'n' bass nuttah Shy FX. Also on the bill are the local favorites you've come to love like Spice, Sikora, Mayhem, D-Lemma, KNCTRNL and more. Studio Central (Ware)

SAMMY KERSHAW -- A big-hat Nashville act in every respect except for the hat, Kershaw used to be a promising George Jones-influenced honky-tonk singer until the production-heavy schlock ballads got in the way. Now he's slickly polished and radio-ready, slinging out pure by-the-numbers schmaltz with a modicum of emotional twang. He's a talented singer, but even Hank Williams couldn't make this turgid pablum sound inspired. Cowboys (Horowitz)

SANDER KLEINENBERG -- Liquid Grove continue to expose Atlanta to a nu_breed of international talent. This time, they present Global Underground's latest find, Holland's Sander Kleinenberg, who plays a fresh set of progressive tech-house. Lush's house flavor, Kolia, completes the evening's sophisticated set. eleven50 (Ware)

MARVELOUS 3 -- See Earshot, p. 79. Also on the bill for On the Bricks: local faceless modern-rockers Something 5, national faceless modern-rockers Five for Fighting, MARS Music prize winners the Evoka Project, plus the Savoy Truffle and Mars Needs Women. Centennial Olympic Park (Sarig)

ROCHES, GEORGE GERDES, MARK JOHNSON -- Headlining this special songwriters-in-the-round event are sisters Maggie and Terre of long-lived American folk trio the Roches. Joining them is George Gerdes, a surreal singer/songwriter known mainly for two LPs released in the '70s. The wild card here is Mark Johnson, an underappreciated genius whose songs have been recorded by artists such as the Smithereens, Paul Butterfield, Dave Edmunds and Robert Gordon. All four perform together for a two-night stand. The Swallow at the Hollow (Nicoll)

TEAM CLERMONT'S BIG WEEKEND -- Athens-based radio promoters Team Clermont celebrate their fourth birthday with a weekend of great acts and PBR specials. This year starts with the dark, flamboyant rock of Pleasure Forever, sure to please fans of the Bad Seeds or Black Heart Procession. Follow with the lush, quirky pop of Departure Lounge and finish with the lo-fi, high-intensity occasionally acoustic Mountain Goats. And don't forget to pick up an invitation to the following night's '80s-themed Blue Ribbon Ball, full of surprises. 40 Watt Club/Athens (Ware)
