BLUE DOGS — The road dogs are back in town, bringing their sepia-toned, Wallflowers-esque sound with them for a two-night stand. It’s well-worn, comfortable and occasionally somnambulistic music from Charleston, S.C. Smith’s Olde Bar (Smith)
JEFFREY BUTTS — Modern Hero’s indefatigable leader hits the road (that is, the roads around town) for a tour of local Starbucks. After a kick off at Ansley Mall earlier in the month, Butts arrives at the Peachtree Battle location for a jittery 6 p.m. acoustic set. Starbucks/Peachtree Battle (Sarig)
CATFIGHT!, PUDDIN — Catfight! are Atlanta’s institution among all-female bands, formed sometime last century. Fun and sloppily rocking. Puddin, meanwhile, turn up the heat with the tasty ’70s hard-rock vocal delivery of tattooed bassist Kim Breeden. Antarctica vs. the World and Gonzales also are on the bill. The Earl (Smith)
GEORGE BENSON, ASO — Inspired by Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian and Hank Garland, 58-year-old George Benson is a jazz guitar master. His fans may wish he’d keep his focus there. However, the Pittsburgh native always has envisioned himself an entertainer, not merely a jazz artist, so his R&B/pop crossovers (“Give me the Night,” “Turn Your Love Around”) make perfect sense, and he does it as well as anyone. COREY BLACK — Nomenclature welcomes Imperial Dub Recordings artist Corey Black back for another night of the deepest West Coast house. Supporting him are DJs Bethany and Michael Scott (of SoCo Audio). Nomenclature (Ware)
DOVES, OUR LADY PEACE, TENDER IDOLS — Britain’s lost souls the Doves have had two lives; first as acid house group Sub Sub, now as makers of epic, haunted and stylishly reflective psychedelia that recalls the Smiths and the Verve. Canada’s Our Lady Peace bring big, hooky radio-friendly hits that recall early ’90s angst. Atlanta’s own Brit-pop band, the Tender Idols, round out the bill with chiming guitars and soaring choruses. GREG HAWKS & THE TREMBLERS, TWO DOLLAR PISTOLS — It’s a night of hardcore honky-tonkin’ from Chapel Hill C&W crooner Hawkes and band, who are as comfortable covering Springsteen as the Everly Brothers. When Hawk really gets the fires stoked, it’s the closest you’ll get to hearing Buck Owens in a club. John Howie’s Pistols are youngsters well schooled in the tradition of George Jones and Johnny Cash. Star Bar (Horowitz/Nicoll)
DANIELLE HOWLE, JENNIFER DANIELS — Mixing intensely serious songs with outrageously funny between-song banter, S.C. troubadour Danielle Howle is an unnaturally gifted entertainer. Jennifer Daniels — a guitar-strumming siren with a beautiful voice and catchy original tunes — opens and also plays a separate, all-ages solo show earlier in the evening. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
BRANDY IRVON — Midtown’s Apache Café follows in the footsteps of its building’s previous tenants, the Yin Yang Café, with performances like this one. Local soul singer/songwriter Brandy Irvon brings his light and tuneful, somewhat New Age-y music to the once (and future?) home of neo-soul. Apache Café (Sarig)
DAVE KOZ AND FRIENDS — He’s young, good looking and has sax appeal to spare, so snuggle in to the venue’s comfy new seats and bring someone to hug. With similarly intentioned, talented buddies such as keyboardist Brian Culbertson and guitarist Norman Brown, both headliners in their own right, this’ll be a night of sparkling jazz-lite played with finesse and soul. LIQUIFIED — Liquid Groove’s drum ‘n’ bass monthly continues with perpetual favorites Danny Tha Wildchild, Phantom 45, Duda & MC Raceone, Ninjakid, Ecotekh, B:Rok and Simlock, spinning everything from jump-up to downtempo in two rooms. 721 Spring St. (Ware)
NOVOCAINE — Metal tends to suck because it so often lacks dynamics, though there are apparently many folks out there content to listen to distorted guitar sludge. Local heavy-rock quartet Novocaine, however, is refreshing in that each grind and churn has a crisp rhythmic propulsion to it. 9 Lives Saloon (Sarig)
OHGR — Former Skinny Puppy members Nivek Ogre and cEvin Key, along with Tim Skold of KMFDM, return with a new experiment in nihilistic industrial rock that sounds an awful lot like the old stuff. The band’s first album, Welt, mixes misanthropic tendencies and ’80s drum machine basslines in an appropriately chaotic chorus of circuitry. Masquerade (Butler)
OUT OF HAND THEATER BENEFIT — A new nine-person theater holds this benefit to raise money for its inaugural season. Performers are local roots-country band No River City, classic rockers Karma Lingo, trio the Zealots, R&B-based rockers Loose Cannons and alt-rockers Crybaby. Red Light Café (Keel)
MARK SELBY — A stinging electric guitarist and accomplished blues-country rock tunesmith (Dixie Chicks, Wynonna), Selby unplugs for a two-night stand. Removed from the bluster of his rocking debut, the bluesman’s tough singing and songwriting will be the focus, though he plays a mean acoustic slide guitar, too. Swallow at the Hollow (Horowitz)
