FRIDAY, NOV 2

ATHENS IMPROVISED MUSIC FESTIVAL -- The first night of the second annual festival features Erik Hinds playing a droning string instrument called the Harpeggionne; guitarist Craig Lieske plucking and picking his way through a variety of styles; and Marshall Avett, formerly of Eyedrum fame, manipulating turntables and brains. Headlining the evening is longtime improv veteran, Birmingham-based violist LaDonna Smith. Flicker Theatre and Bar/Athens (Khalid)

CHARLIE DANIELS BAND -- Wear yer red, white and blue jeans as Southern rock's most grizzled veteran pulls out all the stops in a hit-filled, patriotic display of guitars, fiddles and good-ol'-boy drawl. Daniels was proudly waving the flag before it was cool, but along with the "Up With America" vibe, you also get one hell of a feisty fiddle player who continues to scare the devil out of Georgia. Cowboys (Horowitz)

ELF POWER, TREMBLING BLUE STARS -- Survivors of the withering Elephant 6 collective, Elf Power have been working on a new album minus longtime bassist B.P. Helium. Expect a few new tunes tonight, as the whimsical Elves get powered up for yet another European tour. England's Trembling Blue Stars -- who just released their second Sub Pop album -- recall the autumnal world of '80s New Order and the Cure. Keyboards chirp crisply and baritones chime warmly over synth-like drums, making fragile yet strongly pulsing pop. Mood music if blue is all you ever feel. The Places also perform. The Earl (Smith/Ware)

GAITHERS HOMECOMING -- Bill and Gloria Gaither long have been a fixture of Southern Gospel music, and their inspirational songs have made them one of the most popular acts in the worldly business of praising God. Tonight the couple drop by Philips Arena on their "Homecoming" tour. The multimedia event is tied in to the release of several CDs and videos, including the recent Billy Graham Music Homecoming. Philips Arena (Smith)

MOTOR CITY JOSH & THE BIG THREE -- Detroit transplant Josh Ford blends traditional Chicago blues, a la Muddy Waters, with a swing/boogie influence and no small dose of his country roots. He plays plenty of tasty slide guitar along the way. The resulting blend, along with aggressive marketing and booking, is keeping the band busier than a 24-hour assembly line, particularly in the 'burbs. The Fire House/Woodstock (Powell)

MOVEMENT OF THE SOUL -- The Georgia Coalition for Peace holds its first in a series of benefits to help victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Sundog Quartet performs, as do with rappers Taz Levy, Calarada and Wildseed. DJ Swivel spins. In addition to the music, the event features spoken word by Demac and performance art by Rajni Shah and Theron Schmidt. International Artist Guild (Sarig)

SOUP -- See Earshot, p. 97. Cotton Club (Clifford)

STB -- Sonia Tetlow's rock trio releases its second CD, Swerve, at tonight's show. Adding to the driving hard rock sound of STB's debut, Spit, Swerve ups the dark moods and desperate emoting to create something a little closer to PJ Harvey. Echo Lounge (Sarig)

SUPERMATIC, HANGING FRANCIS, THE YARD -- Kevin Lawson -- Atlanta's archetypal Lonesome Rock Star -- is back in action with Supermatic, a fine new band poised to fulfill the exuberant promise of Lawson's sadly defunct Three Lost Souls. Supermatic's current demo boasts better-than-Journey-man songwriting and it aptly showcases Lawson's dynamic range. Also performing tonight are rollicking scene survivors Hanging Francis, whose Replacements-style rock transcends its Westerbergian roots. The Yard open this solid triple bill with some righteous rock-pounding of their own. Smith's Olde Bar (Nicoll)
