See & Do - FRIDAY/30 Issue Date November 28 2001

U2, GARBAGE — U2 has finally decided to get real after a series of increasingly bloated arena extravaganzas whose irony seemed to grow less potent with each passing tour. And that’s just fine, because U2 has always been more rock band than spectacle. A rare example of a retread that actually works, the band’s latest, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, is proof that growing old gracefully needn’t exclude the occasional glamour shot, its career-sustaining echoes of the band’s late-’80s glory shot through a soft-focus fisheye filter of sophisticated production and stunningly efficient musicianship. Shirley Manson and her homelier Garbage cohorts are touring behind the lifeless Beautifulgarbage. Philips Arena (Rowland)

As tired as Bono may look these days, U2 can still whip the boys and girls into a frenzy. Touring behind their latest, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, the recently recharged Irishmen arrive in Atlanta NOV. 30. They’ll be accompanied by Scotswoman Shirley Manson and her band, GARBAGE, who are making a belated return to the arena spotlight behind their third release, Beautifulgarbage. $47-$132. 7:30 p.m. Philips Arena, One Philips Drive. 404-249-6400.
