You don't always need a reason or philanthropist's motivation to throw a big summer party. Ask Paul Tilghmon (aka Parking Lot Paul) why he chose to put together the second annual two-day Fringe Binge at the Star Bar with Bryan Malone in August, and he sheepishly ponders the question before answering, "It's for the kids – the kids who are over 21."
The second installment of the summertime local punk-rock music festival was conceived simply as something to do for fun on two hot August nights in Atlanta. "There really wasn't as much thought that went into why we wanted to do it," Tillman adds. "It just seemed like a cool thing to do to get some of the newer punk bands to play a show with some bigger, older ones, and get some people to come out and have a good time."
Fifteen mostly local bands will take over the main room and the downstairs vinyl lounge for the festival. On Friday, local power-pop emissary Gentleman Jesse headlines, following performances from the Howlies, the 45s, Derek Lyn Plastic and a few others. On Saturday, performances from Carbonas, Predator and the Hidden Spots from Chattanooga lead up to dueling headliners – classic Ohio punk band the Rubber City Rebels, and a reunion from Atlanta's punk glory the Rent Boys, who played their last show seven years ago.
"Paul asked us to play and we couldn't think of a reason not to," says Rent Boys' guitarist Marlow Sanchez. "I just hope we're as good as we were [a decade] ago."
Fringe Binge. $10-$12. Fri.-Sat., Aug. 1-2. 9 p.m. 404-681-5740. www.starbar.net. Tickets available at Criminal Records.
