Gage Gilmore: The Space Between the Mind and Self

Mission Trips

Picasso had his blue period. He made the world a richer place by exploring his relationship with a single color. Likewise, Gage Gilmore’s debut recording, The Space Between the Mind and Self (Mission Trips), strolls through seven lo-fi numbers where a loose musical theme resonates from a place of minimalist influence and lets sounds do their own thing. Cellist Ben Shirley (Faun and a Pan Flute) cameos on opening number “Rituals,” and again during “Lampmaker.” The rest is all Gilmore gently pressing piano keys and strumming a bass, tapping into the unconscious interaction between sound and chords and the thoughts, moods, and modes of intellectual reaction they inspire. ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
